Nepal is a sovereign nation in South Asia. It is primarily located in the Himalayas, but it also covers parts of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is the 49th most populous country and the 93rd largest in terms of land area. It is landlocked, bordering Tibet to the north and India to the south, east, and west, with Bangladesh barely 27 kilometers (17 miles) from its southeastern tip and Bhutan separated by the Indian state of Sikkim. Nepal has a diversified geography, with fertile plains, subalpine wooded hills, and eight of the world’s ten largest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on the planet. Kathmandu is the capital and largest city. Nepal is a multiethnic country, with Nepali as its official language. The word “Nepal” first appears in literature from the Indian subcontinent’s Vedic period, during which Hinduism, the country’s major religion, was established. In the middle of the first millennium BCE, Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini, southern Nepal. Parts of northern Nepal were intermingled with Tibetan culture. The Kathmandu Valley, which is centrally placed, is inextricably linked to Indo-Aryan civilization and served as the capital of the affluent Newar confederacy known as Nepal Mandala. Valley traders dominated the Himalayan section of the historic Silk Road. The cosmopolitan region produced distinctive traditional art and architecture.
By the 18th century, the Gorkha Kingdom had successfully unified Nepal. The Shah dynasty founded the Kingdom of Nepal, which later formed an alliance with the British Empire and its Rana dynasty of premiers. Instead of colonizing the kingdom, it served as a buffer state between Imperial China and British India. Par Nepalese monarchs suspended parliamentary democracy twice, in 1960 and 2005, despite its establishment in 1951. The Nepalese Civil War of the 1990s and early 2000s culminated in the foundation of a secular republic in 2008, bringing an end to the world’s last Hindu monarchy.
Nepal’s 2015 Constitution affirms the country’s status as a secular federal parliamentary republic divided into seven provinces. It is still the only multi-party, fully democratic nation in the world run by a communist party. Nepal joined the United Nations in 1955, and it inked friendship treaties with India in 1950 and the People’s Republic of China in 1960. Nepal houses the permanent secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), of which it is a founding member. Nepal is a member of both the Non-Aligned Movement and the Bay of Bengal Initiative. Nepal’s military is the fifth largest in South Asia; it is known for its Gurkha past, particularly during World Wars I and II, and has made important contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations.
